At a time when the television industry is undergoing major upheavals, and directors, producers, distributors and decision-makers are wondering how best to ensure the long-term survival of documentaries, the Observatoire du documentaire has conducted an overview of the past five years of documentary production for television, in light of financial data provided by the Canada Media Fund.
In reviewing this data, from 2012 to 2017, we have been able to track the ways in which the documentary industry has responded to unprecedented systemic change.
The figures are presented on an annual basis, according to the parameters of language, format, CMF contribution and budget allocations. Remarks highlighting significant elements are incorporated into each table.
We wish to thank the Canada Media Fund (Nathalie Clermont, Suzanne Keppler, Michael Mastantuono, Richard Koo) for sharing the raw data, which was analyzed and put together by the Observatoire team.
